To make a day of it
Falkenstein stands in Bad Schandau (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Falkenstein is a freestanding sandstone rock, nearly a hundred metres high, rising in the Schrammsteine range near Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland. A medieval watchtower once stood on its summit, dating from the mid 14th century, and steps cut into the stone along with beam sockets are still visible today. It was also here, in 1864, that a celebrated ascent marked the birth of climbing in Saxon Switzerland, a tradition still followed on more than a hundred routes up the rock. There is no building to tour: visitors either walk the surrounding paths or climb the rock face itself.

What to know
- This is not a castle open for visits but a standalone rock bearing the remains of a medieval watchtower.

- Traces of the former fortification, carved steps and beam sockets, can be seen from around the rock or while climbing it.
- The falcon-shaped weather vane that once topped the summit is now kept at the local history museum (Heimatmuseum) in Bad Schandau.
- No opening hours, fees or accessibility arrangements apply, since this is a natural site within a rock massif.
