The Burg Winterstein sits atop an isolated rock massif rising to 389 metres in the remote back country of Saxon Switzerland. It is not a castle in the usual sense but the remains of a medieval rock fortress, where beam rebates, steps cut into the stone and a cistern can still be seen. Considered the largest and oldest structure of its kind in this part of the range, the site is reached via forest paths followed by ladders and rock-cut stairs leading up to the summit plateau.
