To make a day of it

Burgruine Milnrode stands in Bad Hersfeld (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Milnrode is the site of a vanished castle, set on a rocky spur above the Asbach district of Bad Hersfeld, deep in the Knüll forest. Built by the ministerial family of von Milnrode on behalf of Hersfeld Abbey, only foundations remain, uncovered through excavations carried out between 1957 and 1967 and later capped slightly above ground level during the 1980s. Visitors can still make out the neck ditch that once cut the spur off from the hillside, along with the rectangular outline of the upper castle, including the presumed locations of the keep and the hall.

What to know

  • The site lies deep in the forest, away from any settlement, and is reached along a forest track.
  • No standing building remains: only the archaeologically excavated foundations can be seen.
  • A visit amounts to a walk around the remains, with no particular tourist infrastructure on site.
  • The A4 motorway runs close by, crossing the Asbach valley bridge near the ruin, which helps in locating it from the road.
