To make a day of it

Burgruine Altwehrda stands in Haunetal (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Altwehrda is a ruined lowland castle, likely once moated, standing among farmland north of the village of Wehrda, in the municipality of Haunetal. Only one fragment of sandstone wall survives, in the northwest corner, probably once part of a tower, as the rest of the site has been worn away by surrounding agriculture. First recorded in 1308, the castle was destroyed around 1637 during the Thirty Years' War and never rebuilt. Nearby lies a small manorial cemetery where members of the von Trümbach family, former holders of the fief, are buried.
