To make a day of it

Burg Holzheim (Haunetal) stands in Holzheim (Haunetal) (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Holzheim survives today as a sturdy square residential tower, the last remnant of a stronghold once held by the lords von Romrod. Built around 1500 from rubble stone with rusticated corner blocks, it rises four storeys beneath a pyramidal roof and retains its cross mullioned windows and a polygonal oriel on the east side. Three grotesque mask carvings mark its southeastern corner, and traces of a wide moat still surround the building. Purchased by Hesse in 1686, the tower became the administrative seat of the Hauneck bailiwick after the original Burg Hauneck was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

What to know

  • Only a 16th century residential tower remains, standing within the village of Holzheim.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or access conditions are documented for this site.
  • A visit is limited to viewing the tower and the remaining moat traces from the outside.
  • An unremarkable 19th century extension stands next to the tower.
