Schloss Eichhof stands south of Bad Hersfeld on the left bank of the Fulda river, on the site of a medieval moated stronghold built by the abbots of the imperial abbey of Hersfeld. The stone outer walls and the massive square keep from the fourteenth century survive within the later Renaissance wing, which the abbots had converted into a summer residence in the sixteenth century, adding stepped gables, a half-timbered storey and ornate wood paneling inside. Today the grounds host an open-air stage of the Bad Hersfeld Festival, mainly for comic plays.
