To make a day of it

Burg Wolkenburg stands in Königswinter (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Wolkenburg Castle is the vanished remnant of a medieval hilltop fortress that once crowned a peak of the same name in the Siebengebirge range, within the town of Königswinter. Built in the 12th century by the Archbishop of Cologne to secure his contested territory, the castle gradually decayed and was largely consumed by centuries of quarrying that stripped away much of the summit itself. Little of the structure survives today, and the site is now better known for the volcanic latite stone extracted there, which was used in numerous buildings across the region.

What to know

  • No structure of the original castle remains to visit, as the site was largely destroyed by quarrying.
  • Visiting means hiking up through the Siebengebirge to the summit of the Wolkenburg hill.
  • The former Stürtzplatz, once reached via the Drachenfels path, has not been part of the official trail network since 2013.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, since this is an open-air natural site.
  • No information on accessibility or parking is available for this location.
