To make a day of it

Burgruine Rosenau stands in Königswinter (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Rosenau sits on the summit of the Große Rosenau, within the Siebengebirge nature park, between the Nonnenstromberg and the Ölberg. Of the medieval hilltop castle only sections of a trachyte ring wall remain, up to six metres high, standing on an artificially levelled platform. The site later became a mountain hotel in the late 19th century, a chapter that ended with wartime bombing damage and a subsequent demolition. Visitors today come mainly for the forest walk and the views over the Siebengebirge, with the ruin itself amounting to these conserved wall fragments.

What to know

  • The site is reached on foot via a forest trail in the Siebengebirge, with no car park at the summit.
  • Only wall fragments survive, there is no building or interior to visit.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as it is an open-air site freely accessible.
  • The former hotel that once stood here is gone, demolished in the 1950s after wartime damage.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable, since the approach follows a hiking path through hilly terrain.
