To make a day of it

Burg Westerhusen stands in Hinte (Landkreis Aurich), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Westerhusen was a stronghold of a Frisian chieftain, destroyed in 1436 by troops from Hamburg, and nothing of that original structure stands today. A Renaissance-era mansion later occupied the site, followed by a manor house rebuilt several times over the centuries. What remains visible are the barn (Schatthaus) built around 1600 and the earthworks and moat traces that once enclosed the fortified site. The manor house that now stands there serves as a residential facility for people with disabilities and is not open to visitors.

What to know

  • The Schatthaus, built around 1600, is the oldest preserved building on the grounds.
  • The present manor house is a residential facility for people with disabilities and cannot be visited.
  • The site is protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
