To make a day of it
Westerburg (Groothusen) stands in Krummhörn (Landkreis Aurich), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Westerburg stood on a fortified site dating from the late Middle Ages in Groothusen, one of three strongholds once shared among the village's leading families. No medieval building survives above ground today, but the double moat system that once surrounded the residence can still be traced in the landscape, hinting at the former scale of the stronghold. On what was once the outer bailey stands a Gulfhaus farmhouse built around 1800. The site is best approached as an open-air archaeological remnant rather than a standing monument.

- The farmhouse visible today on the former outer bailey is a Gulfhaus dating from around 1800, built well after the stronghold's existence.
