To make a day of it

Burg Sachsenstein stands in Landkreis Göttingen (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Sachsenstein is an 11th century ruined castle perched on a rocky spur at the southern edge of the Harz, close to Bad Sachsa. Built by Henry IV as an imperial stronghold meant to secure his rule over the rebellious Saxons, it was never finished and never rebuilt after being destroyed. Visitors can still make out an unusual gatehouse formed by two hexagonal towers flanking a square gate building, along with the remains of a round tower and stone ramparts. The ruin stands amid gypsum cliffs riddled with small cavities, locally nicknamed the "dwarf holes".
