To make a day of it

Poppenburg stands in Holzen (Landkreis Holzminden), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Poppenburg is a former spur fortification, now vanished, perched on a rocky plateau above Holzen overlooking the Ruthebach stream. No historical records survive concerning its builders or occupants: only pottery shards and riding spurs found on site allow archaeologists to date its use to between the second half of the 11th century and the second half of the 12th century. The site was only identified in 1984 by a local historian, and it has never been formally excavated. Visible remains include a ditch, an earthen rampart, and a depression in the ground thought to mark the cellar of a lost building.
