Burg Ottenstein stands in Ottenstein (Landkreis Holzminden), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Ottenstein once stood on the site of today's village of Ottenstein, in the Landkreis Holzminden, Lower Saxony, as a moated castle belonging to the Counts of Everstein. It was probably founded by Count Otto V towards the end of the 13th century and first documented in 1393, when it was pledged to the County of Pyrmont. The castle was demolished in 1701 on the orders of Hilmar von Mansberg and replaced by a half-timbered building that later served as a local courthouse. No fortified structure survives above ground today, apart from a stone house dating from the mid-17th century, the only remaining trace of the site.
What to know
- No standing fortifications remain of the Burg Ottenstein, only a stone house from the mid-17th century survives on the site.
- The location is now part of the built-up village of Ottenstein, with no organised castle visit on offer.
- The monument is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Lower Saxony.
- Later buildings that stood on the site, including a former courthouse, were themselves demolished in the 20th century.
