To make a day of it

Schloss Grohnde stands in Emmerthal (Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Grohnde stands on the bank of the Weser at Emmerthal, on the site of a medieval stronghold of which little remains beyond the massive gatehouse tower. The present four-winged complex rises three storeys around a square courtyard, combining stone and timber framing from building phases spanning the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Long the seat of a district administration, the estate now belongs to the state of Lower Saxony, which leases it as a farming domain. The former landscape park south of the schloss still shows faint traces of the old moat and ramparts.

What to know

  • The schloss functions today as a leased farming estate belonging to the state of Lower Saxony, which limits access to the inhabited buildings.
  • The fourteenth-century gatehouse tower in the north wing remains the oldest and most visible surviving element.
  • The park south of the building, along the Weser, offers views of the complex from outside.
  • No opening hours, admission fees, or accessibility details are published, so visitors should check locally beforehand.
