To make a day of it
Burg Sternberg stands in Extertal (Kreis Lippe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Sternberg stands on a spur of the Dörenberg hill, at an altitude of 315 metres, overlooking the Lippe region as far as the Teutoburg Forest. Ceramic finds date the oldest parts of its curtain wall to around 1100, while the stone keep that gave the Sternberg family its name was built around 1240 under Count Heinrich I of Sternberg. Over the following centuries the castle changed hands repeatedly between the counts of Schaumburg and the lords of Lippe, enduring sieges, fires and rebuilding. The north tower was converted into a residential hall in the late sixteenth century and now houses the knights' hall, with a chimney bearing the arms of the two families.
