To make a day of it
Burg Horn stands in Horn-Bad Meinberg (Kreis Lippe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Horn stands at the edge of the old town of Horn-Bad Meinberg, on the eastern fringe of the Eggegebirge hills. Built by the lords zur Lippe and completed in 1348, it served over the centuries as residence, administrative seat, dower house, granary and even a prison. Its baroque staircase, added during the 1656 to 1659 remodelling, still bears the date 1659 and the family's coats of arms above the portal. Today visitors can see the local history museum set up on the upper floor, while part of the building is used for other purposes.
What to know
- Only part of the building can be visited, as part of the local history museum on the upper floor.
- An adjoining administrative building now houses a police station, unrelated to the visit.
- The castle barn, dating from 1744, stands right next to the main residential building.
- The baroque facade with its staircase and portal dates from a 17th century remodelling of the older medieval structure.
