To make a day of it

Schloss Vinsebeck stands in Steinheim (Kreis Höxter), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Vinsebeck is a moated castle built in the early eighteenth century on a square island in the Heubach, a tributary of the Emmer, in the Vinsebeck district of Steinheim. Once a summer residence for canons of Paderborn, it remains privately owned and is open to visitors both inside and out. Several state rooms have kept their original decoration, among them the Italian Room and the Chinese Room, with stuccowork and painted linen wall coverings. The surrounding garden still shows something of its baroque layout, including a Neptune fountain and stone figures.

What to know

  • The castle is surrounded by a moat some seventeen metres wide, reached by a side bridge leading to the terrace in front of the main facade.
  • The property is privately owned, which shapes how and when it can be visited.
  • It has served as a filming location for two German films, in 1957 and in 1973.
  • The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
