To make a day of it

Iburg stands in Bad Driburg (Kreis Höxter), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Iburg is a ruined hilltop stronghold on a wooded spur of the Egge hills above Bad Driburg. Its origins go back to an 8th century Saxon refuge fort, later taken over by Charlemagne and rebuilt in stone as a knight's castle by the Bishop of Paderborn in the late 12th century. Visitors can still make out the remains of a round keep, stretches of the curtain wall, and the footprint of a hall building and a chapel. The ruin stands in open woodland and can be walked around freely.

What to know

  • The site is freely accessible, with no known opening hours or admission fee.
  • The walk up starts from a car park near the Iburgstadion and follows a path of about 1.15 km.
  • Only open-air ruins remain; there is no covered building to visit.
  • The hilltop also gives access to the Kaiser-Karls-Turm viewing tower and the Sachsenklause inn right next to the ruins.
  • The terrain is wooded and steep in places, so sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
