To make a day of it
Ruine Falkenburg stands in Detmold (Kreis Lippe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. No visits are on record for this building.
The Ruine Falkenburg crowns a wooded hilltop in the Teutoburg Forest south of Detmold, preserving the remains of a stronghold begun at the end of the 12th century. It was commissioned by Bernhard II and his son Hermann II, lords of Lippe, and once included a main castle, an outer bailey and an enclosure wall. Abandoned in the 16th century and later stripped of much of its stone by local villagers, the site underwent archaeological excavations from 2005 to 2018 that uncovered the walls of the great hall, a gate tower and a keep. Still owned by a direct descendant of its builders, the ruin is meant to be preserved and secured rather than rebuilt.

- The ruin can only be reached on foot, via forest tracks from Johannaberg, a southern district of Detmold, over roughly one and a half kilometres of ascent.
- Free access to the site has only existed since July 2018, as archaeological digs previously restricted visits to guided groups.

- Several other attractions in the Teutoburg Forest, including the Externsteine rocks and the Hermann Monument, lie within reach for a longer outing.
