Welfenschloss Münden stands in Hann. Münden (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 3.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Welfenschloss Münden stands on a slight rise in the old town of Hann. Münden, close to where the Werra and Fulda rivers join to form the Weser. The building seen today, now reduced to two wings, dates from a rebuilding campaign begun in 1571 in the Weser Renaissance style, after fire destroyed an earlier ducal palace erected from 1501 onward. Guided visits take in two Renaissance chambers decorated with extensive wall paintings from the 1570s, among the few surviving examples of their kind in northern Germany. The building now houses public institutions and still bears the marks of a long history as princely residence, barracks and grain store.
What to know
- The Renaissance wall paintings can only be seen as part of a guided tour.
- The building now has just two wings, since the third burned down in 1849 and the fourth was never completed.
- The schloss stands in the heart of the old town, close to where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet.
- The building currently houses public institutions, which limits access to some parts.
