To make a day of it
Spiegelburg stands in Laubach (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Spiegelburg is a small medieval ruin set on a wooded hilltop in the Kaufunger Wald, south of Laubach, overlooking the Werra valley from a steep slope. What remains today is essentially a set of earthworks: a rectangular enclosure of roughly 40 by 50 metres defended by two lines of ditches and banks, along with a stone platform in the northwest corner believed to mark the former residential building. Traces of an outer bailey can still be made out about 60 metres to the southwest, where an earthen rampart once closed off the spur. No written records of the stronghold survive; its period of use, between the 12th and 14th centuries, is known only from archaeological finds.
What to know
- The site can only be reached on foot via marked forest paths.
- A signposted trail starts from a car park near a hotel and campsite on the Werra river.
- This is not a restored castle but an open-air site of earthworks, with no standing walls or buildings.
- There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the ruin lies freely accessible in the forest.
- Sturdy footwear is advisable given the sloping, wooded terrain.
