Burg Sensenstein is no longer a castle in any structural sense: only earthworks and ramparts remain on a wooded hilltop overlooking the Kassel basin. Built in the 14th century by the Landgraves of Hesse to secure the border against the Duchy of Brunswick, it fell into decline and was eventually torn down, its keep blown up in the 17th century. The site now hosts the Jugendburg Sensenstein, a youth and sports education centre run by the Landkreis Kassel, standing right next to the former fortified ground.
