Ludwigstein Castle rises above the Werra valley near Witzenhausen, in Hesse, on a hill that once marked a contested border with Mainz territory. Built from 1415 onward under Landgrave Louis I of Hesse, it keeps its tight, rectangular layout around a narrow inner courtyard, with a round keep standing beside the western gate. Most of the rubble-stone walls date to the original construction, while the inner wings, rebuilt in half-timber around 1560-1580, reflect its later role as an administrative seat. Left to decay by the late 19th century, it was rescued after the First World War by the German youth movement, which turned it into a memorial site and a youth centre still in use today.
