To make a day of it

Lippoldsburg stands in Lippoldshausen (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Lippoldsburg is an early medieval earthwork fortification set on a wooded rocky spur above the Ilk valley, close to the Werra river near Hann. Münden. It was not a residential castle but a refuge fort where the local population could take shelter with their livestock in times of danger. Excavations carried out in 1998 uncovered the remains of a pincer-shaped gate, still visible today, while the rest of the enclosure survives only as a low rubble bank. The site, now covered by forest, can be reached on foot via a marked path running through a deeply cut stream valley.

What to know

  • The site can be visited freely and at no cost, outdoors, throughout the year.
  • Access is on foot from a car park on the road linking Lippoldshausen to the B 80, near a small bridge.
  • The path runs through a fairly steep wooded stream valley, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • No standing structures remain, only ground traces and an excavated gateway, with an information panel on site.
  • This is not a castle in the usual sense but an archaeological earthwork site in a forest.
