Ronneburg Castle sits atop a steep basalt cone in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, in Hesse, visible from a considerable distance across the surrounding countryside. Founded as early as the 12th century, it passed through the hands of several owners before becoming, in the 16th century, the residence of the Ysenburg-Büdingen-Ronneburg line, which gave the castle its Renaissance character. Visitors can still see the keep with its distinctive domed roof, the building known as the Zinzendorfbau, and the residential wing called the Neue Kemenate, all dating from that period. The complex suffered heavy damage during the Thirty Years' War before being restored and recognized as a heritage site from the early 20th century onward.
