To make a day of it

Schloss Gettenbach stands in Gründau (Main-Kinzig-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Gettenbach is a modest 19th-century manor built in the depths of the Büdinger Wald forest, in the hamlet of Gettenbach that belongs to the municipality of Gründau. The present building grew out of an older farm courtyard, enlarged during the 1840s and 1850s into a hunting and summer residence for the Ysenburg-Büdingen-Meerholz branch of the family. Built from exposed local sandstone rubble, it is notably plain rather than grand. The premises now house a social care institution, which largely shapes what, if anything, can be visited.

What to know

  • The building currently houses a care facility for people with disabilities, which limits public access to the interior.
  • No visiting hours or fees are documented, as the site is not set up as a monument open to tourists.
  • The schloss stands isolated within the Büdinger Wald forest, away from usual tourist routes.
  • The plain sandstone rubble facade is best seen from outside the courtyard.
  • The building is listed as a Kulturdenkmal, which does not imply public access.
