To make a day of it
Burg Alzenau stands in Alzenau (Landkreis Aschaffenburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Alzenau stands on a rocky outcrop at the heart of Alzenau, overlooking the market square. Built between 1395 and 1399 by the archbishops of Mainz, it served as their administrative seat and was repeatedly pledged as collateral during the turbulent fifteenth century. The late Gothic hall building, restored in the 1970s after years of decay, contains a knights' hall regarded as a notable example of German castle architecture. Its inner courtyard and hall now host cultural events, including theatre and music festivals.
What to know
- Reaching the inner courtyard requires climbing a steep path from the town below.
- The interior, including the Gothic knights' hall, can only be seen on group tours or during scheduled events.
- The outer courtyard hosts summer festivals such as the Burgfestspiele theatre performances.
