To make a day of it

Randenburg stands in Alzenau (Landkreis Aschaffenburg), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Randenburg is a former stronghold in the Spessart forest, now preserved only as an archaeological earthwork southeast of Alzenau. Built around 1175 by the lords of Kälberau, it was a sizeable fortification, some 150 metres long, before being torn down in 1266 following the conflict between the counts of Rieneck and the archbishopric of Mainz. What remains are ditches, ramparts and the traces of a nearby siege camp, still visible in the terrain. There is no standing building to visit: it is an outdoor site where one walks among buried remains.

What to know

  • This is not a standing castle but an archaeological earthwork site hidden in the forest, reached via a woodland path.
  • Visible ditches and ramparts remain, but no built structures have survived above ground.
  • The visit takes place outdoors, with no opening hours or admission fee, in a Spessart forest setting.
  • Illegal mountain bike trails threaten the preservation of the site, so visitors should keep to marked paths.
  • A 13th-century siege camp lies about 300 metres northeast of the main site, worth the extra walk.
