To make a day of it

Schloss Hüttelngesäß stands in Freigericht (Main-Kinzig-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The remains of Schloss Hüttelngesäß stand away from the usual tourist routes, tucked into the Hessian Spessart between Niedersteinbach and Geiselbach. This former moated castle, first documented in 1131, was never rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1405 during the Wetterau robber war. What remains today are sections of the enclosing wall, parts of an outbuilding and fragments of the residential tower, now part of the neighbouring Forsthof estate. The appeal lies more in the forgotten, overgrown character of the ruin than in any intact architecture.

What to know

  • This is a partial ruin, with no building open for interior visits.
  • The site lies on private land adjoining the Forsthof estate, so its boundaries should be respected.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or visitor facilities are known for this site.
  • Visiting mainly involves a walk through the Spessart woodland, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
