To make a day of it

Burg Reichenstein (Westerwald) stands in Puderbach (Landkreis Neuwied), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Reichenstein stands as a ruin in the Westerwald, in the municipality of Puderbach, the remains of a Gothic stronghold built in the 14th century by the Walpoden of Neuerburg. It was already destroyed in 1618 on the order of the counts of Wied, passed through several owners, and was eventually bought by the local council in 2006, since when restoration work has continued. Visitors today find sections of walls and towers that recall a medieval defensive layout, set within wooded surroundings good for walking.

What to know

  • The local heritage association also organises open visits on one Sunday a month, from May through autumn.
