Where
Altenkirchen

Schloss Altenkirchen stands in Altenkirchen (Landkreis Altenkirchen), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Altenkirchen served as the residence of the counts of Sayn, on the site of an earlier fortress built in 1317 alongside the town's fortifications. Rebuilt in the 18th century after a fire destroyed the town in 1728, the complex included several wings around a courtyard, among them a stone-built main residence and a wing known as the Husarenflügel. Neglected by rulers who lived far away, the building fell into decay and was sold for demolition in 1862, with its remaining traces almost entirely destroyed at the end of the Second World War. Today only the name of the Schlossplatz in Altenkirchen recalls the building.
