Katz Castle rises above the Rhine near Sankt Goarshausen, facing Sankt Goar, within a site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage property under the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Built in the 14th century by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, it was destroyed on Napoleon's orders in 1806 and later rebuilt in a neo-medieval style at the end of the 19th century. In private Japanese ownership since 1989, it can only be admired from outside, as its interior remains closed to visitors.
