To make a day of it
Burg Herzogenstein stands in Dörscheid (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Herzogenstein is the ruin of a medieval castle that was never completed, standing on a rocky spur called the Roßstein above the Rhine, near the village of Dörscheid. Begun in the 14th century by Count Palatine Ruprecht I to secure territory he had recently acquired, construction was halted after opposition from the town of Oberwesel and the intervention of Emperor Charles IV. Only scattered remains survive today: parts of a tower, the foundations of a building some eight to ten metres wide, and a few stretches of wall, set in wooded surroundings above the valley.
What to know
- The ruin lies in open countryside, away from any road, reached on foot from Dörscheid via a farm track.
- Access to the site is free, with no opening hours or ticket.
- The Rheinsteig long-distance trail along the Rhine passes right by the ruin.
- Only limited remains survive, a tower fragment and a few wall sections, so visitors should not expect an intact structure.
- As the terrain is wooded and elevated, sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
