Schönburg stands in Oberwesel (Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on September 21, 2026.

The Schönburg rises above the town of Oberwesel on a rocky spur of the Rhine, within the valley listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in the 12th century, and the castle was for centuries held jointly by numerous branches of the von Schönberg family, a shared arrangement still visible today in its three former keeps and separate residential sections. Burned by French troops in 1689, it lay in ruins for more than two hundred years before being partly rebuilt around the turn of the 20th century. Visitors today can see the massive arcaded shield wall, the tall gate tower now housing a museum, and the restaurant terrace with views over the Rhine toward Burg Gutenfels.

The walk up from Oberwesel takes about thirty minutes on a steep, winding path.

There are steps already at the entrance and in various areas of the hotel. In addition, from the car park it is about 150 meters uphill over a partly uneven cobblestone path to the hotel entrance.
