To make a day of it
Schloss Gemünden stands in Gemünden (Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Perched on a rocky ridge above the Simmerbach valley, Schloss Gemünden stands on the site of a medieval fortress first recorded in 1301. Destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession by troops under Louis XIV, it was rebuilt in its present form between 1718 and 1728 on the old foundations. The complex combines a rectangular three-storey residence with four sturdy round corner towers topped with baroque-curved roofs, alongside the ruined remains of the older keep nearby. The estate has remained in the hands of the same family since it passed to them through marriage in the early 19th century.
