Kastellaun Castle stands in ruins on the hill above the town of Kastellaun, to which it is still linked by the former town wall. Built in the 13th century for the Counts of Sponheim, it served as a residence at several points in its history before French troops destroyed it in 1689, after which it was never rebuilt. Visitors today can see the remains of the keep, a residential building and a powder tower, while the rebuilt lower bailey houses a documentation centre on regional history.
