Burg Braunshorn, in Braunshorn, in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis district of Rhineland-Palatinate, marks the remains of a motte thought to be the ancestral seat of the lords of Braunshorn, first recorded in 1098. Little survives of the original stronghold, believed to date from the second half of the 11th century, beyond a rectangular mound roughly twenty metres across with faint traces of a surrounding earthwork. The site now borders a mid-20th-century house and shows no standing structures.

What to know

  • This is not a walkable ruin but a plain earth mound, with no wall or tower still standing.
  • The ground is enclosed by a tall fence and cannot be approached or entered.
  • No archaeological excavation has ever been carried out on the mound, so its date remains uncertain.
  • The motte sits directly next to a house built in the 20th century.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since the site cannot be visited.
