Hohlenfels Castle stands on a limestone crag in the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis, overlooking the Hohlenfelsbach valley, its fissured and hollow rock having given the castle its name. Built in the 14th century to watch over old trade routes, it passed through centuries of divided inheritance, partial ruin and rebuilding, visible today in its inhabited 18th-century main house. Visitors can see a pentagonal keep, remains of the medieval shield wall and a structure still shaped by the repair work carried out since partial collapses at the end of the 1970s.
