An earlier stronghold is thought to have existed on the site as far back as the 11th century, though the Burg Großbodungen is first documented in a charter of 1461, when it was held in fief by the counts of Hohnstein, Schwarzburg and Stolberg. The present four-wing, three-storey building group is marked by a 27-metre keep set into its facade, along with a timber-framed inner courtyard and a barrel-vaulted cellar. Originally built as a moated castle, its water defences have since been filled in.
