Burg Greifenstein actually refers to a pair of castles, Obergreifenstein and Untergreifenstein, perched on a rock above the Holzelfingen valley near the town of Lichtenstein. These twin strongholds date back to the 11th century, raised by the knights of Greifenstein to guard the surrounding valleys. What remains today are ruins only: fragments of the encircling wall at Obergreifenstein and scant traces of walls and ditches at Untergreifenstein, some 150 metres away.
