To make a day of it

Burg Falkenstein stands in Waldhof-Falkenstein (Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Falkenstein is a ruined medieval hilltop castle perched on a steep rocky spur above the Our valley, within the German-Luxembourg nature park. It is reached by a narrow path cut into the rock, which gives a sense of the site's original defensive purpose. What remains includes the gatehouse, parts of the shield wall, one wall of the palas, a defensive tower, vaulted passages, the chapel and remnants of the stables. The property is privately owned and still inhabited.

What to know

  • Getting there involves a narrow, steep rocky path, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • Since the castle is privately owned and inhabited, only parts of the ruin can be seen from outside.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees are listed, as access is not organised like at a typical tourist site.
  • The surrounding nature reserve along the Our river is as much a part of the experience as the ruin itself.
