Schönecken Castle stands on a rocky spur above the Nims river in the Eifel region. Built between 1218 and 1245 by the counts of Vianden to guard the lands of Prüm Abbey, it was once among the largest defensive strongholds in the western Eifel, covering roughly 120 by 60 metres. In 1384 it came under the authority of the Archbishopric of Trier, was burned down in 1802, and was later sold for demolition before undergoing several restoration campaigns during the 20th century. Now a ruin, it belongs to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
