Burg Gerolstein sits on a rocky outcrop above the town of Gerolstein and the Kyll valley, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Founded in the early 12th century by Gerhard von Blankenheim, it was expanded over the following centuries into a fortified stronghold with a massive two-metre-thick shield wall. Struck by lightning and later damaged by French troops at the end of the 17th century, the castle survives only as ruins, which have since been restored. Visitors can still see remnants of this defensive wall along with traces of two chapels built in 1486.
