Kerpen Castle rises on a dolomite spur above the village of Kerpen, in the Eifel region. Its origins go back to the 12th century, probably to Sigibertus de Kerpene or his son Henry I, and the site went through more than two centuries of inheritance disputes among noble families before passing to the House of Arenberg and being partly destroyed by French troops in 1682. Visitors today can still make out the 23-metre battlemented keep, a 35-metre-deep medieval well, and the remains of the castle's three terraces.
