To make a day of it

Burg Neuweiler stands in Blankenheim (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Neuweiler sits on a rocky spur in the Ahr valley, a short distance downstream from Burg Dollendorf near Blankenheim. First recorded in 1077, this early medieval stronghold lost its significance by the late 12th century as the lords of Dollendorf rose to prominence, and the site is last mentioned in 1534. Today only buried foundation remains survive, on ground that was partly cut through when the Ahr valley railway was built in the early 20th century.

What to know

  • This is an excavated ruin with no standing structures, only foundation traces visible at ground level.
  • The site lies outdoors on a wooded spur between the Ahr and the Lampertsbach, with no known visitor facilities.
  • The Ahr valley railway line cuts through part of the terrain, altering the historic layout of the site.
  • No main keep or outer bailey could be identified during the 1998 archaeological survey.
