To make a day of it

Burg Alsenborn stands in Alsenborn (Landkreis Kaiserslautern), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Alsenborn, locally also known as Dieburg, lies east of the old village core of Alsenborn, on the grounds of the local swimming pool. It is a motte type fortification whose remains have been recreated in recent times, a reconstruction that only follows the outline of the medieval structure without reproducing its original form. Excavations carried out in 1935 and again in 1965/66 uncovered a Salian era wooden tower mound, later rebuilt under the Hohenstaufen dynasty with a stone tower of rusticated masonry and a polygonal ring wall. Traces of the moat that once surrounded the mound can still be made out on the site.

What to know

  • The site is freely accessible, located on the grounds of the Alsenborn swimming pool.
  • What visitors see today is a modern reconstruction of the mound's outline, not the original medieval remains.
  • A playground is situated right next to the mound.
  • A visit amounts to a walk around the mound, as there is no building or interior to tour.
