To make a day of it

Burg Perlenberg stands in Bann (Landkreis Kaiserslautern), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Perlenberg is an isolated ruin on a wooded ridge near Bann, in the Landkreis Kaiserslautern. Likely built in the 12th century under the Staufer dynasty to oversee the road between Kaiserslautern and Landstuhl, it appears to have never been finished. Only the base of a square keep survives, its carefully hewn bossed stones hinting at an ambitious original project. Reaching the site means a steep, unmarked walk through dense forest, and the ruin retains a remote, little visited character.

What to know

  • The path to the ruin is unmarked and starts from the Einsiedlerhof heading toward the Kolbenwoog.
  • The final climb is steep, leading to a summit plateau now enclosed by tall trees with no open view.
  • The site lies within a natural forest reserve, so visitors should stay on the paths.
  • Only the base of the keep remains, the rest of the fortress has vanished or was quarried for stone.
  • There are no set hours or fees, the ruin can be visited freely.

Frequently asked

Why is Burg Perlenberg so ruined?
Archaeologists believe the castle was never completed, which would explain the absence of signs of habitation or violent destruction.
Where does the name Perlenberg come from?
The name is not medieval, it first appears in a 1542 document concerning a border dispute between the Electoral Palatinate and the Sickingen family.
Can you go inside Burg Perlenberg?
Only the open-air base of a keep survives, reachable after a forest walk, with no interior structure to visit.
Is the underground tunnel legend true?
A supposed underground passage linking Burg Perlenberg to the Teutonic commandery of Einsiedeln is a local legend never confirmed by excavations.
