To make a day of it
Burg Wilenstein stands in Trippstadt (Landkreis Kaiserslautern), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Wilenstein stands near Trippstadt, in the Palatinate Forest, on a site fortified as early as the 12th century. Once the seat of a family of ministeriales tied to Hornbach Abbey, it formed a double stronghold together with the neighbouring Burg Flörsheim, whose ruins can still be seen nearby. Destroyed in the 14th century during a siege led by the Archbishop of Trier, the castle has since been converted into a self-catering group house, which today makes it more of a lodging venue than a conventional heritage site to tour.
What to know
- The site today operates as a self-catering group house for school classes, choirs or similar groups, rather than as a monument open to individual visitors in the usual sense.
- The nearby ruins of Burg Flörsheim, which together with Wilenstein once formed a double stronghold, can be seen close by.
- No opening hours, admission fees or individual visiting arrangements are given, as access is organised through group bookings.
- The castle is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
- The surrounding Palatinate Forest makes a walk through the woods a natural way to approach the site, rather than a formal guided tour.
