The Beilstein castle ruins stand on a rocky outcrop roughly two kilometres east of Kaiserslautern, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Of this medieval stronghold carved partly into the rock, only sections of the outer wall, a gateway and the rock spur itself remain, the latter still marked with the notches that once held the beams of a keep long gone. Now owned by the city of Kaiserslautern, the site can be explored outdoors and is tied to a local legend of a proud noblewoman guarded by two ghostly figures.
What to know
- The ruins are outdoors and freely accessible, with no fixed opening hours.
- Only fragments remain: wall sections, a gateway and the rock spur, there is no roofed building to tour.
- The site sits in woodland just outside Kaiserslautern, near the road to Hochspeyer.
- The ground is uneven, so a marked path and sturdy footwear are advisable.
- There is no admission fee, as access to the site is free.
