To make a day of it
Burg Nanstein stands in Landstuhl (Landkreis Kaiserslautern), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Nanstein Castle overlooks the town of Landstuhl from a rocky spur roughly eighty metres above it. First recorded in the 13th century, it later became the seat of the knight Franz von Sickingen, who had it converted in the early 16th century into a stronghold designed to withstand firearms. The 1523 siege by a coalition of princes brought his military career to an end and left him fatally wounded. Visitors today can see the remains of this fortress, including the partially rebuilt artillery tower, along with traces of its later Renaissance remodelling and the destruction it suffered in the 17th and 18th centuries.
